CHwapi: Integrated building and room automation for an integrated healthcare cluster

A new hospital complex is under construction in the heart of the city of Tournai. This healthcare cluster will unify education, research and medical excellence in a single urban location. The “Site Unique” project also stands as a prime example of sustainable building management.

There are good reasons why the Wallonia Picardy Hospital Centre (CHwapi) calls its project “Site Unique” and speaks of the “hospital of hearts”. With its new complex, which will consolidate all its activities in the city centre of Tournai, CHwapi is setting new standards. The goals are twofold: to increase efficiency, reduce operating costs and improve patient care, while also creating a building complex that maximises energy efficiency, operational safety, user comfort and future readiness. Future-proof solutions from SAUTER will support these objectives.

The solution

Through their business relationship of more than 15 years, the technical team of CHwapi has been familiar with SAUTER Belgium‘s services and solutions. In this project, the realisation of the HVAC system was awarded to the temporary joint venture consisting of the companies Close – Spie – Cegelec – Thersa.

SAUTER Vision Center (SVC), serving as the hospital’s current building management system, was again chosen as the preferred solution for this project. The web-based integration platform enables the central monitoring, analysis and control of all building functions, including HVAC systems, energy management, lighting and security. However, the comprehensive options for energy monitoring were the key factors in Close – Spie – Cegelec – Thersa’s decision in favour of SVC. The energy module allows detailed monitoring and analysis of energy consumption and identifies potential savings. Additionally, the system’s capability to integrate various communication protocols, such as BACnet, BACnet/SC, Modbus and KNX ensures smooth and secure data exchange between devices and systems from different manufacturers.

CHwapi also relies on the modulo 6 product range, which ensures energy-efficient control of the HVAC systems. Like SVC, modulo 6 can be flexibly adapted to specific requirements and enables secure data transmission by supporting security measures such as encrypted communication, an embedded firewall and BACnet/SC.

With ecos room automation, SAUTER not only provides a suitable solution for the precise control of room conditions in individual spaces, such as in operating theatres and patient rooms, but also offers simple room operation. Via intuitive room units, users can intervene at any time and adjust the room climate to their needs.

The result

SAUTER’s harmonised technical solutions for integrated building and room automation will support CHwapi in making operations in the new hospital complex efficient, safe, sustainable and convenient for building users. This positions CHwapi ideally to meet both the current and future requirements of the region.

The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. Afterwards, the operation of the new healthcare cluster’s buildings will continue to be monitored and optimised through a service contract with SAUTER Belgium.
